Jack’s Video for week of 1/18/2016

Doing videos of the week this year. Check out this week’s video!

“You have to fail a lot, you have to fail early, and and you have to fail forward. If you’re not willing to fail, you’re never gonna put up that last shot. If you’re not willing to fall on your face, you’re not going to be able to create at a high level.”

Always in Stride,

I love being in the cheering section in the final miles of a race.

I love being in the cheering section in the final miles of a race.

There is so much drama and human emotion during the tail end of the race. I vividly remember athletes slowing to a walk as the weight of the distance comes down upon them. What I find most motivating is watching them feed off the energy of the crowd and finding a way to turn their walk, back into a run. You can see the determination in their face and eyes. Their passion burns brightly and the surrounding people feed off that energy. The crowd surges with the quickening pace of the runner and all inhibition of human emotion is lost. It is pure and it is real. These are the moments I remember most.

Motivation is a funny thing. It seems to arrive in all different forms. We’re never quite sure when or how it’ll show up.

It seems that we assume that to be a source of motivation you need to be the top athlete, or someone “important”. That’s just not the case.

Skip to 1:13 to see the everyday motivation.
For me, hearing the struggles of the regular guy are motivating. Because unlike the elite athletes of the world who are worrying about finishing in the top 10, sponsors, and their fans, the regular guy knows our pain, struggle, and despair.

The regular guys are training day in and day out with kids, spouses, mortgages, day jobs, and diseases. They are paying their own way to the race and doing it for their own self-satisfaction. They may think that no one is watching them, but they are wrong.

Keep this in mind, every day you go for a run. Often people are too shy to dole out compliments, but I can guarantee you someone you don’t know is inspired by your run. You are a motivator, a hero, and a leader just because you get out there each day and go for a run. Never underestimate yourself and always push on. You are a motivation source to many.

Always in Stride,

what most runners are all about

“It’s very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit.”
George Sheehan

I love that quote by George Sheehan. It gets to the heart of what most runners are all about. You aren’t running against anyone. Only yourself. The video only helps to make that point clearer.

Don’t let that little voice win.

Always in Stride,

In case you don’t know who Kilian Jornet is

“I am not afraid to fail, to get lost, to dream, to be myself, to find. I am not afraid to live.” – Kilian Jornet

Today, lets take a page out of the book of one of my favorite athletes of all time: Kilian Jornet.

In case you don’t know who Kilian Jornet is; by age 25, Kilian had won every major event that he had set out to. These included top ultra marathons like: Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, Western States 100, and many more. In short, Kilian is one of the most decorated trail runners ever.

So after he won every race he set out to, people asked: “are you going to stay on the circuit and keep winning?” His answer was simple: “Why?”

It is said that the core of man’s spirit comes from new experience. Kilian understands this well. After all these accomplishments he set off on a project called “Summits of My Life”. The point of the project being to summit and descend major mountains around the world at world record times.

Kilian, but take a different path. Don’t run the same old way.

Go up that hill, or down into that valley.

Always in stride,

Love Affair With Adventure

We as runners are always seeking out adventure whether it be on the trails, around the block, or exploring a new town. Grand Trunk Goods recently released one of my favorite videos ever to motivate you to get out there and explore. It’s a big, beautiful world out there, so go explore it and check out this great video:

It’s You Vs. No, Can’t, Next Year, Last Year, Statistics, History, The Odds

Running isn’t a competitive sport, but you are always competing.

Who are you competing against? Your inner demons.

Your inner demons are the part of yourself that says “No, you can’t go on a run. You can get in shape next year. And last year you ran a lot. So there is no need to go out today.”

Well, I got news for you, today is your day to fight back against those inner demons. It’s time to put them on notice.

It’s You Vs. No
It’s You Vs. Can’t
It’s You Vs. Next Year
It’s You Vs. Last Year
It’s You Vs. Statistics
It’s You Vs. History
It’s You Vs. The Odds

The clock is ticking, lets see what you got.

Always in stride,

Maybe the best Pregame speech I’ve come across.

Maybe the best Pregame speech I’ve come across. Although it’s a blatant advertisement for Miami, it still gets at something deeper. What is in your heart that drives you forward.

Life it gonna hit you

Life is gonna hit you in your mouth and your why has to be greater than that knock down.

How many times do we start a running routine only to off the wagon a couple months later. It easy to start something, but harder to maintain it.

This motivational video reminds us that we all get knocked down sometimes. But our reason why has to be bigger than the reason we got knocked down.

So if your running, but you don’g know why your doing it. I’d encourage you to find that reason. Because that reason is what will keep you going when times get tough.
